Circle City Con
2022 branding
Year: 2022
Client: Circle City Con
Industry: Information Security
Project: Every year in Indianapolis, Circle City Con chooses a fun theme for its hacker conference, for which the identity I create informs everything from the the website to swag and contests. Since it predicted The Apocalypse in 2020, we’re trying to keep it light and joyful instead of grim.
Hackers of a certain age remember waking up on Saturday mornings, pouring a bowl of cereal, and plopping down in front of the TV, still wearing pajamas. For CCC 9, I hired my old friend Paige Pumphrey to collaborate on this important assignment, since she’s a real illustrator who can draw characters in a way that I fall short. I directed the project, and I think we did a pretty swell job. We decided to draw three generic cartoon characters so we wouldn’t violate any copyright laws. I wanted them to represent our infosec community with anthropomorphized masculine, feminine, and non-binary people. I’m a fan of drawing animals instead of people, since it’s otherwise impossible to represent all ethnicities generically.
Since mental health is very top-of-mind lately, we’re giving a nod (on the TV knobs) to Project Semicolon, which promotes mental health awareness and suicide prevention.
Contribution: Logo concept and creative direction. More swag items coming soon.
