Pumpcon 0x1a logo

Year: 2017

Client: Pumpcon

Industry: Information Security

Project: A year before DEF CON began, a group of hackers in Philadelphia started a one-day con in a bar called Pumpcon. It inspired a young hacker named @TheDarkTangent to start his own little hacker con in Las Vegas one year later: DEF CON (it’s not so little anymore).

This logo is loaded with symbolism. The original used the Gonzo fist, a nod to an all-time favorite hacker rebel, the late Hunter S. Thompson. Because I’m also a big fan of not only HST, but also the illustration work of his Gonzo journalism sidekick Ralph Steadman, I decided to channel Steadman’s splatter-brushstroke, expressionist style the best way I could in vector art. I also added the bat from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, referring to the scene where HST says, “We can’t stop here; this is bat country!” (Fun fact: I got a tattoo of said bat in Las Vegas.) Instead of peyote in the fist, we used an RJ45 jack and wifi antennae to indicate the general nature of the Pumpcon presentations.

The neon orange changes color under sunlight and blacklight (pictured). Special thanks to t-shirt models (L to R) knarphie, 1dark1, and chuk.

Contribution: Logo design; shirt print sourcing at Gimmee Gimmee Tees.
